Pipe Dream has you covered with three tasty recipes that will keep you satisfied.

Zucchini Noodles in a Mushroom Tomato Sauce

Ingredients:

1 large zucchini

5 baby bella mushrooms

1 jar of tomato sauce

Chopped garlic

Diced onion

Oregano

Black pepper

Instructions

1. Chop one large onion — or use frozen diced onions — and add them to a large sauté pan with a tablespoon of oil.

2. Once the onions are clear, add chopped garlic, chopped mushrooms, tomato sauce and spices to the pan. Let simmer for 15 minutes on low.

3. Using your spiralizer, make spaghetti-sized noodles out of the zucchini. Add the zucchini noodles to the pan and simmer for five additional minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. Serve noodles with a side of baked chicken or tofu.

Kani Salad

Ingredients:

1 package of imitation crab sticks

1 large cucumber

2 tbsp of mayonnaise

Sriracha

Black pepper

Steps

1. Slice the imitation crab sticks in half and peel into thin strips that are about the width of linguine.

2. Using the “thin” setting on your spiralizer, create “noodles” with the cucumbers. Slice the cucumber “noodles” into small strips that are about the same size as the strips of imitation crab.

3. Mix the mayonnaise and sriracha to taste before adding it to the mixture of crab and cucumber.

4. Add black pepper to taste and serve in a bowl or over slices of cucumber.

Zucchini Shoestring Fries

Ingredients:

1 large zucchini

Flour

2 eggs

Black pepper

Salt

Chili powder

Steps

1. Using your spiralizer, create thin zucchini noodles. Use a knife to cut the zucchini into the smaller segments.

2. In one bowl, mix together the flour, black pepper, salt and chili powder. In another bowl, whisk together the two eggs.

3. Dunk the zucchini in egg and then dredge in the flour before placing it on a tinfoil-lined pan.

4. Bake the fries at 350 degrees for approximately 20 minutes until they are golden brown.

Football movies to get you in the spirit https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/football-movies-to-get-you-in-the-mood/64911/ Sat, 06 Feb 2016 03:26:31 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=64911 Gathering with friends to watch the big game is great, but before the Panthers and Broncos take the field, there’s not much to get you in the mood for football besides slapping on some face pant and digging into a plate of wings. Luckily, Hollywood is known for their love of sports films, and there are enough empowering football movies to last you the whole weekend before the big game. To get you pumped for Super Bowl Sunday, binge on these classic football films.

1. “The Blind Side”

Watching “The Blind Side,” the biopic about Carolina Panthers’ offensive tackle Michael Oher, before Super Bowl 50 is a must. Sure, Oher may be just another player on Sunday, but the story of his rise from poverty to college football superstar will move you to tears. Quinton Aaron plays the towering Oher in the movie, which follows the star athlete’s time as a high school football star adopted by a wealthy family, the Touheys. Aaron’s heartwrenching portrayal of Oher — also his film debut — led to critical acclaim that helped land the film an Academy Award nomination for Best Film. Plus, Sandra Bullock’s Academy-Award winning performance as Oher’s spunky and compassionate mother, Leigh Anne Tuohy, is enough to keep you interested, even if football isn’t your thing.

2. “Remember the Titans”

“Remember the Titans” follows the story of Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), a black man hired to coach football at a recently desegregated high school. The movie centers around the racial tensions between the formally all-white team and the new black players, as well as between Boone and former coach Bill Yoast — portrayed by Will Patton. When Boone replaces Yoast, the white players on the team threaten not to play, but as in all great football movies, the team eventually forms a bond, and the film culminates with a championship game that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

3. “Friday Night Lights”

“Friday Night Lights,” based on the book “Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream” by journalist H. G. Bissinger, follows the Permian High School Panthers as they vie for the Texas state championship. As the team slotted to take the title, the students face the pressure of letting down their town, their school and most importantly, themselves. The movie takes on heavy topics like alcoholism, abuse and racism, and is packed with so much drama from start to finish that it’s hard to believe it’s based on a true story. Plus, if you like the movie, you can binge on the critically acclaimed television show of the same name after the big game.

4. “Varsity Blues”

If you’re looking for a football film with a few laughs, “Varsity Blues” delivers. The story follows a Texas high school football team, led by captain Jonathan “Mox” Moxon — portrayed by former teen heartthrob James Van Der Beek. The team comes together out of spite for legendary but abusive coach Bud Kilmer — played by Jon Voight — who tries to force the players to push past safe limits in the quest for a championship. From serious injuries to whipped-cream bikinis, the film is a perfect balance of cut-throat Texas high school football and a lovable movie.

5. “Rudy”

Who doesn’t love a true underdog story? “Rudy” follows the most famous walk-on in history, Rudy Ruettiger as he grows from a Notre Dame super fan with a dream to a student and practice player at Notre Dame and finally, in his last game, an actual member of the team. If the final scene of the movie doesn’t have you standing on your feet chanting “Rudy,” you’ll might as well not watch the Super Bowl. This movie will have you ready to go out and play on Sunday — and by play we mean sit on your couch, indulge in food and watch the big game — or your favorite commercials, either one.

Pizza and wings are easy to order, but sometimes these tried-and-true eats can get a little old. If you’re looking to whip up a meal that’s a little more festive, or want to feed a crowd while keeping cleanup to a minimum, check out Pipe Dream’s Super Bowl-themed recipes to make your event a touchdown.

Rice Krispies Football Treats (Makes 8-10 Servings)

Ingredients

— 6 cups of puffed rice cereal

— 1 10-oz. bag of marshmallows

— 3 tbsp. butter

— 1 package melting chocolate (milk or dark)

— 1 package melting chocolate (white)

Steps

1. Add butter and marshmallows to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2 minutes and stir with a buttered spoon — this will help keep the spoon from sticking. Microwave again on high for 1 minute.

2. Remove bowl from microwave and stir before slowly mixing in the puffed rice cereal. Using wax paper or the buttered spoon, press the mixture into a pan and place in the refrigerator to set for about 30 minutes.

3. Once set, cut the treats into small ovals to resemble footballs. Place the milk or dark melting chocolate into a bowl and microwave in 30-second increments until chocolate is smooth but not burnt. Coat the football shapes in melted chocolate and return to the fridge to set.

4. When the chocolate has hardened, place the white melting chocolate into a bowl and microwave in 20-second increments until chocolate is smooth but not burnt. Place the white chocolate into a Ziploc bag, cutting a small hole in one corner so you can pipe stitches onto the football.

5. Pipe a single, white line down the middle, and then five stitches across that line. Return to the refrigerator until set and serve.

Game Time Chili

Ingredients (Makes 10 servings)

— 1 lb. ground turkey or beef

— 2-3 cans dark red kidney beans

— 1 bottle of chili sauce

— 1 28 oz. can of crushed tomatoes

— 1 6 oz. can tomato paste

— 1 onion

— 1/2 tbsp. black pepper

— 1 tbsp. chili powder

— 3/4 tbsp. garlic powder

— 1/2 tbsp. onion powder

Steps

1. In a large pot, sauté chopped onions until clear. Add ground meat and cook until completely browned.

2. Add kidney beans, chili sauce, crushed tomatoes and tomato paste to the pot, stirring to combine all ingredients. If the mixture is too thick to stir easily, slowly add water until a thinner consistency is reached.

3. Add pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and chili powder to taste, adding extra chili powder for more spice. Cover and let the chili simmer on a low heat for about an hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

For a vegetarian alternative, replace the ground meat with soy beef crumbles or diced sweet potatoes.

Easy Carolina BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

— 1 cup white vinegar

— 1 cup cider vinegar

— 1 tbsp. brown sugar

— 1 tbsp. cayenne pepper

— 1 tbsp. hot sauce (Franks or Tabasco)

— 1 tsp. salt

— 1 tsp. black pepper

Steps

1. Combine ingredients together in a jar or container with an airtight lid. Place in the refrigerator — shaking occasionally — for one to two days in order to allow the flavors to come together.

2. Use as a marinade or sauce for chicken, burgers, sandwiches, tofu or vegetables on game day.

Adapted from allrecipes.com

Rocky Mountain High Quesadilla Stack

Ingredients (Makes 8-12 servings):

— 1 package of skirt steak, chicken or tofu

— Carolina BBQ Sauce (or store-bought BBQ sauce)

— 1 package of shredded cheddar cheese

— 1 package of camembert (or other soft cheese)

— 16 flour tortillas

— 2 bell peppers

— 2 onions

Steps

1. Slice the meat or non-meat product of your choosing into small strips and marinate in BBQ sauce overnight. Dice and sauté the onions until clear, and dice and cook the peppers until soft.

2. Coat a heated pan large enough to hold a tortilla with nonstick cooking spray. Spread a light layer of your soft cheese on one tortilla before placing it cheese-side up in the pan.

3. Place the meat or tofu, onions and peppers on the tortilla, and top with cheddar cheese. Press down to flatten the quesadilla and flip and cook until the outside is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

4. As the quesadillas are completed, stack them on top of each other using some of your soft cheese as a glue if desired, creating a “mountain” of quesadillas.

5. Cut into slices and serve with guacamole, sour cream and salsa on the side.

More bands for your buck https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/affordable-music-festivals/64640/ Tue, 02 Feb 2016 15:00:55 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=64640 Summertime means summer festivals, and while fun, these concerts can get extremely pricey. If you’re living on a college budget, they’re often impossible to go to. However, this doesn’t mean you need to miss out on the fun. Many festivals will allow you to go for free if you donate some of your time to working at the festival, but if you aren’t willing to miss out on some of the fun, there are more affordable options out there. To alleviate your summertime sadness, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best values the East Coast festival scene has to offer.

SunFest

A lot of people in the Northeast don’t know about SunFest in West Palm Beach, Florida, a five-day festival that’s been host to huge names like Ellie Goulding and Pretty Lights in 2014 and Lenny Kravitz and Schoolboy Q in 2015. While this year’s lineup won’t be announced until February 25, at just $75 for a five-day pass, this festival is an unbeatable value. The festival also includes a Fine Arts Show, fireworks and a 5K race, so there will be plenty to keep you busy between sets. Sure, you’ll have to travel to Florida, but with such low prices, attending SunFest will allow you to listen to some amazing acts — and catch some rays — without completely breaking the bank.

Dates: 4/27 – 5/1

Prices: 1-day pass – $35; 3-day pass – $55; 5-day pass – $75

Taste of Country Music Festival

One of the worst things about being a country music fan in New York is pining over all of the country festivals happening in the South that are too far to travel to. Luckily, only a two-hour drive from Binghamton is the Taste of Country Music Festival at Hunter Mountain, New York. The lineup includes country superstars Kenny Chesney, Jake Owen and Kid Rock, as well as rising stars Old Dominion and The Swon Brothers. Tickets start at $175 for a three-day pass without camping, and with low travel costs, it’s the ideal festival for country fans who don’t want to travel all the way to Tennessee for the outrageously priced CMA Musical Festival.

Dates: 6/10 – 6/12

Prices: 3-day pass without camping – $175 before fees; 3-day pass with camping – $210 before fees

Boston Calling

Although it’s only in its fourth year, Boston Calling is known for consistently getting big names, and this year is no different. Located in Boston City Hall Plaza, this year’s event will feature acts including Sia, Haim and up-and-coming artist BORNS. General admission tickets start at only $185, and if you can catch a $1 bus from New York City to Boston, the cost is definitely manageable. Plus, finding a cheap place to stay in the city or the surrounding area is far from impossible, so with just a little smart saving, a trip to the festival isn’t out of reach.

Dates: 5/27 -5/29

Prices: Friday pass – $60; 2-day pass – $160; 3-day pass – $185

Firefly

For those that want a Coachella-level lineup but don’t have personal connections with Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Firefly is a choice East Coast option. Located in Dover, Delaware, this year’s acts include Mumford & Sons, Blink-182, Fetty Wap and Kings of Leon. While the price of a ticket is a steep $299, you are allowed to pay in monthly installments leading up to the event. If you’re looking for top-shelf content, but can only pay as you get tips from your waitressing job, Firefly is doable. Plus, Fetty Wap will be there, need we say more?

Dates: 6/16 – 6/19

Prices: 3-day pass without camping – $299 before fees

Mountain Jam

For those invested in the indie music scene, seeing Beck and other indie superstars might not be so far-fetched. Also located in Hunter Mountain, New York, headliners at this event include The Avett Brothers and Wilco. Tickets start at $185 for a 3-day pass without camping, and for the reasonable price, you’ll also be able to catch acts like Michael Franti & Spearhead, Umphrey’s McGee and Gary Clark Jr.

Dates: 6/2 – 6/5

Prices: 3-day pass without camping – $185 before fees; 3-day pass with camping – $219 before fees; 4-day pass without camping – $205 before fees; 4-day pass with camping – $239

Start New Year’s Eve on the right note with Pipe Dream’s playlist https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/nye-playlist/64048/ Thu, 31 Dec 2015 23:34:15 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=64048 If the new year is the next chapter in your life story, then it definitely deserves a brand new soundtrack. We couldn’t have ushered in 2011 without Usher’s “Yeah 3x,” and 2016 deserves the same kind of entrance. To help get the year started right, Pipe Dream has compiled a playlist for everything you might be feeling as move on to this next calendar year.

“The Start Of Something New”

High School Musical Cast

This song is a quintessential New Year’s jam. It was written as a backdrop for the everlasting romance of Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez, so why shouldn’t it start your new year as well? Listen to it and reminisce in some good old 2006 nostalgia. This is especially relevant for the High School Musical’s tenth anniversary. Feel old yet? Yeah, so do we.

“Something Big”

Shawn Mendes

As the newest rising teen pop star said, “something big is happening,” and that something is 2016. Get your hopes up high for the upcoming year with this upbeat song from someone younger and more successful than you. Mendes’ lyrics are vague enough where they can really apply to any New Year’s resolution you might have, so whether it’s health and fitness or better grades, Mendes will be cheering you on from the sidelines.

“Trap Queen”

Fetty Wap

Say “hey, what’s up, hello” to 2016 with one of the year’s biggest hits from the year’s fastest rising artist. Fetty Wap reigned supreme in 2015, and no New Year’s playlist would be complete without the chance to scream “1738” one last time. Grab a glass of champagne — or the nearest 40 — and ring in the new year with your favorite trap queen.

“Last Dance”

Donna Summer

No good party is complete without a final dance to this late ’70s crowd-pleaser, so why not end your year the same way? Before you count down with Carson Daly or Ryan Seacrest, grab a friend and say goodbye to 2015 with some killer dance moves. If your already feeling nostalgic for the year behind you, make your last dance a combination of all of this year’s dance crazes — and then leave them where they should stay — in the past.

“Never Forget You”

Zara Larsson and MNEK

Whether this year was one of your best or filled with regret, it’s probably one that you’ll never forget. Ring in 2016 with this dubstep anthem from 18-year-old Swedish pop star Zara Larsson. With it’s killer beat, Larsson’s incredible vocals and lyrics that simultaneously make you feel like you want to move on and never let go, this song will perfectly capture your booze-induced feelings as the ball drops.

“Forever alone”

Kakkmaddafakka

Yeah, we all want someone to kiss on New Year’s Eve, but unless you’re involved in the rituals of cuffing season, a midnight smooch might not be an option. Blast this by yourself while everyone else is starting the year off lip-locked, and maybe the singing in your ears will fill the empty space in your heart.

“Peanut Butter Jelly”

Galantis

Once the clock strikes midnight, the only thing left to do in the night is party until it’s time to go to bed. Still, staying up late isn’t for everyone, and if you start feeling sleepy once the ball drops, there is no better song to wake you up then this fun dance theme. It’ll help you go from 0 to 60 without Redbull, or worse, a Four Loko.

“First Day of My Life”

Bright Eyes

After a long night of eating, drinking and desperately looking for someone to kiss at midnight, start the new year off with a mellow hopeful tune from indie heartthrob Conor Oberst. A new year means a fresh start, so while you’re nursing your hangover, remember that 2016 is the first day of the rest of your life, even if it feels like you’ll never leave your bed again.

Get in the spirit with these seasonal sweet treats https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/get-in-the-spirit-with-these-seasonal-sweet-treats/63361/ Fri, 04 Dec 2015 06:17:05 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=63361 The start of the holiday season means parties, gifts and festive decorations. But best of all, it means baked goods, and lots of them. Although starting from scratch can make cookies and cakes feel a little more special, there’s no shame in starting from a box and adding special touches to make your creations really stand out. Here are four simple holiday-themed recipes that not only taste great but are sure to impress.

Mini White Chocolate Mousse Pies

Pie is delicious, but what’s even better is getting a pie all to yourself. For this recipe, start by melting a white chocolate baking bar with 1 tablespoon of milk in a saucepan over medium heat. While this is heating, make a package of white chocolate pudding according to the instructions on the box. Once the pudding is set, fold about half of a container of Cool Whip, along with the melted white chocolate, into the mixture. Fill pre-made mini pie shells with the pudding mixture and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Top it off with extra Cool Whip if desired, along with red and green sprinkles. Add crushed candy canes if you want an extra festive crunch.

Adapted from The First Year

Peppermint Brownies

Start with a packaged brownie mix to save time and follow the instructions to make the batter, adding in semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract for extra decadence. Once the brownies are out of the oven, heat a quarter cup of heavy cream for about 30 seconds until it starts to bubble. Then, add in about 4 ounces of dark chocolate and stir for one minute until smooth to create a ganache for the top of your brownies. Spread the ganache over the cooled brownies and top with crushed candy canes, then place in the refrigerator for one hour so that the ganache can set.

Adapted from The Bakerita

Cinnamon Sugar Cookies

Using a traditional sugar cookie mix, prepare the dough as instructed on the packaging. Add in 1 teaspoon of cinnamon extract, along with ½ a teaspoon of nutmeg. Make sure the ingredients are well mixed. If desired, use cookie cutters to make festive shapes. While the cookies are baking, whisk together 1 ¼ cups of confectioner’s sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon until smooth to create a cinnamon glaze to top your cookies. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cookies and top with sprinkles if desired.

Glaze adapted from My Recipes

Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies

Starting with a chocolate cookie mix, prepare the dough as instructed. If you prefer a less intense chocolate flavor, start with a sugar cookie dough and add a ¼ cup of cocoa powder to the dry ingredients. Roll the dough into small balls — about 1 tablespoon each — and then roll the balls of dough in a bowl of granulated sugar. Do the same in a bowl of confectioner’s sugar. Place the cookies on a cookie sheet and lightly flatten each cookie, making sure to make a deep thumbprint in the middle of the flattened dough. Bake as instructed and, once cooled, fill the center with anything from candy to your mom’s homemade jam. You can also make your own chocolate ganache to fill the cookies, but make sure to top it with any extra decorations before the ganache cools.

Pipe Dream’s tunes to get toned to https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/pipe-dreams-post-thanksgiving-workout-playlist/63204/ Mon, 30 Nov 2015 14:39:32 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=63204 Exercising can be a struggle, but if you’re listening to the right music it can be a way better experience. Upbeat songs are essential to breaking a good sweat, and fun music is especially necessary with finals looming in our future. Whether you’ve got your workout routine set or you’re down to try Pipe Dream’s ab circuit, this playlist is sure to get you to pump your fist while you pump iron.

“Sorry” — Justin Bieber

If you haven’t seen the video for Justin Bieber’s single “Sorry,” stop what you’re doing and watch it now. The song’s upbeat tempo is perfect for cardio, whether you draw inspiration from the video’s amazing choreography or skip the dance moves for a run on the treadmill. The song’s tropical house vibe is also rhythmically sound, so it’s a great choice to keep you going during repetitive body weight training like crunches or push ups.

“Plastic Bag” — Drake and Future

A true gem off of Drake and Future’s dual release “What a Time to Be Alive,” “Plastic Bag” is the perfect song for a move the rappers are sure to appreciate: squats. One of the slower and less-hype tracks, the song has a consistent rhythm that creates perfect timing for the up and down motion. Plus, you can pretend that you’re picking “up all the cash” while Drake watches. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.

“Roses Ft. Rozes (Sammy Remix)” — The Chainsmokers

You should only listen to this song in public if you are comfortable with your dance moves, because it is impossible to sit still while it’s playing. The song gradually picks up in speed, so if you’re looking to transition from a jog to a run, we’ve got you covered in tempo. That being said, be careful not to fall off the treadmill from excitement once the beat drops. Also this song is on SoundCloud, but it’s worth the download.

“Cake By the Ocean” — DNCE

The song might talk about eating cake, but it’s enough to make you want to keep running for miles instead. This newer track is 3:38 seconds of pure unadulterated fun, and with four members, DNCE has an awesome group singing effect. You might be alone at the gym, but you’ll feel like a slew of your most high-energy friends are cheering you on. Also, Joe Jonas is in this band. Need we say more?

“Hit Em’ Up Style (Oops!)” — Blu Cantrell

For anyone that likes to work out while feeling like the coolest person in the gym, then travel to 2001 with this necessary workout track. This song is all about getting back at cheaters by selling their things and spending their money. Tune out everyone else in the room and feel like the badass you really are while you get in shape. How can you not feel motivated with lyrics like, “Put your hands on his cash and spend it to the last dime for all the hard times”?

“In Too Deep” — Sum 41

2001 brought us another great workout hit, this time in the form of Sum 41’s “In Too Deep.” This song is angsty and angry and everything that you need blasting in your ears while you attempt to lift. Especially if you’ve had a bad day, this song is cathartic in all the right ways. Channel that anger into something productive as you work off the pounds of stuffing you ate last Thursday.

“7/11” — Beyonce

If you want to get a Beyonce booty, then you’re going to need to put in some major work. The superstar’s hit is perfect for intense leg exercises, especially those that include any type of pulsing. Since the lyrics don’t really make sense, you won’t be distracted from the song’s infectious and high-energy rhythm, which will help get you through even the most painful of leg days.

Click your way to big savings this Cyber Monday https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/click-your-way-to-big-savings-this-cyber-monday/63201/ Mon, 30 Nov 2015 14:39:29 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=63201 Thanksgiving is a time for food, family and — for the budget-conscious student — it’s a time for some major savings. But if you were too full to fight through the crowds on Black Friday, there’s still time to get some of the season’s best savings from the comfort of your bed. With just a little research and a good WiFi connection, you can save big on everything on your wish list on Cyber Monday.

If you’re looking to save on quality pieces, the best clothing deals you’ll find online won’t be from retailers like Forever 21 and H&M, whose prices are already low year-round. While both retailers have heavily discounted their prices for the occasion, this is the time to focus on the big players.

Try exploring online-only clothing retailers like ASOS and Net-a-Porter. While you’ll spend a little more than $1.99 for a tank, these sites, among others, are offering deep discounts on quality designer clothing. You may not want to splurge on a $1,000 Dolce & Gabanna jacket, but for women, Net-a-Porter has many designer finds for an extra 50 percent off for the holidays. If you are looking for a wider variety of items, ASOS offers men’s and plus-size clothing, as well as discounts on already reasonably priced options from designers, as well as their in-house brand.

Another way to get great deals is by going directly to the source. If you’re dying for a new pair of Adidas Sambas, check out their holiday sale before looking at other sources. While Target may be offering 15 percent off site-wide for knock-offs, designer brands like Adidas and Kate Spade are giving deep discounts that make the prices comparable. Still, some items will be more expensive, but investing in quality pieces that will last will save you more in the long run.

For those more electronically minded, Cyber Monday is one of the best times to save on televisions, computers and other tech gadgets you’ve been dying for. If your laptop is on the brink of a total hard drive meltdown, Dell is offering discounts of hundreds of dollars on many of their most-popular models. Online-only retailers like eBay and Amazon are also offering deals on cameras, speakers and televisions. The GoPro HERO4 has been marked down $150 on eBay, while Amazon is offering an LG 43-inch Smart LED TV for half off its original $1,099.99 price tag on the site.

When shopping for electronics, make sure to compare prices between stores, the manufacturer and online retailers, as some places — like Best Buy — will match the best price you find.

Whether you’re looking to pick up a new computer or a whole new wardrobe, checking out Cyber Monday deals are a great way to save big bucks. Make sure to get online early, since the best deals will sell out quickly. If you can’t get exactly what you want, however, don’t worry — the holiday sales are just beginning.

Nev Schulman to speak at Binghamton University https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/nev-schulman/60081/ Fri, 30 Oct 2015 23:49:47 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=60081 The Student Association Programming Board (SAPB) announced Friday that TV personality and producer Nev Schulman will be coming to campus for “An Evening with Nev Schulman.” Schulman, whose full name is Yaniv Schulman, is the host and executive producer of MTV’s “Catfish: The TV Show.”

In his television series, Schulman attempts to help those who have gotten into online relationships that might be a bit, for a lack of a better word, fishy. In a world where anyone can hide themselves online, Schulman and his co-host Max Joseph attempt to bring together those who think they have found love on the internet. Beginning in 2012, the show was spawned from the critically-acclaimed film “Catfish” — which was co-directed by Schulman’s brother — that follows Schulman’s attempt to meet the woman he met and fell in love with online.

During the presentation, Schulman will talk about his background and work on “Catfish: The TV Show,” and audience members will have the opportunity to ask him questions. The author and television star hosts lectures at college campuses to speak about online dating and life in a social-media-saturated world. According to the SAPB’s Facebook page, the event will be followed by a meet and greet.

For those interested in meeting the MTV star, Schulman will be signing his book, “In Real Life: Love, Lies & Identity in the Digital Age,” which will be available for purchase outside of the venue. Schulman will only be signing for 30 minutes, however, so the meet and greet is first come, first serve. Schulman’s book uses his personal experience and experiences from his show to investigate the motives behind “catfishers” and attempts to help readers avoid being deceived online.

Bernadette Machuca, vice president for programming of the student association, is excited to be bringing a popular name to Binghamton University.

“It’s definitely a little difficult to find someone within budget that will be appealing to the majority of students,” said Machuca, a senior majoring in biology. “But when we came across Nev Schulman’s name, we felt that he had a pretty large following and we also felt that a lot of what his work is based on is pretty interesting and appealing to college students.”

Last year, the SAPB brought Giancarlo Esposito, who played Gus Fring on “Breaking Bad,” to speak at Binghamton University. Esposito, who also appeared in Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing” and ABC’s “Once Upon A Time,” spoke to students about finding his passion for acting at a young age, and encouraged students to go after their own dreams.

Victoria MacGilfrey, a sophomore majoring in industrial and systems engineering, thinks that the event will have a good turnout due to the show’s popularity.

Allyson Maltz, a sophomore majoring in nursing who watches the show regularly, is curious if Schulman has difficulty staying professional during such emotionally charged situations.

“It’s a really interesting show,” Maltz said. “I like the shows that change every week. It’s a different story every week, but the same overall message.”

The event will take place in the Osterhout Concert Theater at 7 p.m. on November 5, and is free of charge.

The Binghamton Mural Review: Part 4 https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/the-binghamton-mural-review-part-4/59610/ Tue, 20 Oct 2015 15:15:32 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=59610 Slowly canvassing the Union, Release continues to review Binghamton University’s finest — and most unrefined — wall art.

The Ping Pong Room (Room 029 in the Undergrounds)

We use the word “mural” very lightly here. Dictionary.com defines a mural as “a large picture painted or affixed directly on a wall or ceiling,” and while this piece of “art” fits the definition, some colorful circles and randomly placed lines don’t quite do it for us. The centerpiece of the mural is a ping pong player clad in some striped ensemble with a semblance of Pantone 342. Odd patterns aside, the most notable thing in this mural is his weirdly defined leg muscle. Seriously, who painted that? It’s uncomfortably visible on the left thigh and also above the right knee; the latter “muscle” definition looks more like extra white pants material than anything else. It’s also sad to see that this determined player never got a nose, but instead a large black triangle. Eliciting imagery of Scarecrow from “The Wizard of Oz,” it’s honestly pretty terrifying. Also, this man is clearly unable to smell the delicious vegan dishes coming from the nearby Food Co-Op. The shapes surrounding the man look like a kindergartner’s poor attempt at a Kandinsky-inspired art project. That or the weird wall decals that were always advertised in Pottery Barn youth catalogs. We’re sure this design had a purpose, and it seems to be an attempt to recreate a bouncing ping pong ball. However, it ended up just looking like concentric circles made up of poorly saturated colors. Don’t waste your time on this mural; ping pong isn’t worth it.

Black Student Union Lounge (Room 006 in the Undergrounds)

Around the corner from the ping pong disaster is a historical tribute to black achievement, located in the Black Student Union’s lounge. The mural was created around 1968 when the lounge was first established. The timeline, painted in black and white, features historical figures from Egyptian queen Nefertiti all the way to South African revolutionaries Nelson and Winnie Mandela. The mural also showcases other icons in African-American history, including slaves breaking from their chains, portraits of abolitionists Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman and members of the Buffalo soldiers, an all-black cavalry established during the Civil War. What’s great about this mural is that it’s not only visually appealing, but its cultural significance is a refreshing look on Binghamton University’s walls. Additionally, BSU has an equally impressive, albeit more colorful, mural in their office on the third floor of the New Union that’s worth checking out.

Big Sean lights up the Events Center https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/big-sean/59386/ Fri, 16 Oct 2015 07:04:22 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=59386

The Events Center was filled with students ready to bounce on Thursday night as Big Sean headlined the fall concert.

Cozz, who recently toured with J.Cole, opened with a set that was prompt and generic. Many of the 22-year-old’s lyrics were typical — “I’m the motherf*cking man, you should ask around” — and his themes included murder and side bitches.

The rapper had a much greater stage presence than the night’s second opener, Adrian Lux, a DJ from Sweden. Lux’s sound was strikingly mild, but the transitions between songs were fluid and the artist’s light show was impressive and transfixing. The DJ sampled radio hits like “How Deep Is Your Love” and played his biggest hit, “Teenage Crime.”

Perhaps it was the conflicting time schedule with the Mets playoff game, but the Events Center floor seemed to be mostly full of only dedicated Big Sean fans. It was clear that much of the audience knew the words to most of the songs — though attendees not as familiar with the rapper were able to sing along to some of his biggest hits like “Clique,” “Dance (A$$)” and “Blessings.”

Bobby O’Connell, a resident of Endicott and long-time fan of Big Sean, was excited to hear that the rapper was performing.

“I knew that when Big Sean came, I had to let my boy Jay know that we gotta go to this concert because [Big Sean] is the dopest dude out there right now,” O’Connell said. “He’s up there with Drake, J. Cole, Kendrick, man. He’s top five right now.”

Big Sean did not disappoint. The rapper began his set with “Paradise,” the second single from his most recent album. The crowd, whose energy had grown slowly since the openers, erupted when Big Sean enthusiastically appeared on stage. As the show went on, the rapper’s star power became clear.

During one of Sean’s slower hits, “One Man Can Change The World,” the audience held up cell phones and lit up the Events Center. The rapper dedicated the song to his grandmother, who passed away a few months ago and was one of the first female African-American captains in World War II. The song hit a sentimental note, as Big Sean reminded the audience to never give up on their dreams.

Neha Krishnan, a senior majoring in business administration, got the opportunity to meet Big Sean after winning a Facebook contest held by the Student Association Programming Board (SAPB).

“It was amazing,” Krishnan said. “He was so sweet and down to Earth and I still can’t believe I got to meet him.”

A highlight of the night came during Sean’s performance of “Guap,” when a man in a lion suit and Red Wings hockey jersey — which was featured in the song’s music video — ran on stage to remind the crowd of Big Sean’s Detroit roots.

Nolin Castor, a sophomore majoring in music, was excited to hear songs from Big Sean’s older albums, like “Hall of Fame.” And though he had hoped that the performer would have had a longer set, he enjoyed the show regardless.

“It just had me lit,” Castor said. “The energy was real.”

Big Sean was not afraid to make some bold statements. As he closed the show, he had choice words for the crowd.

“Yo, security get off their d*ck,” he said. “Police we appreciate what you do but let’s just all have a good time in this bitch.”

Hannah Hersch, the vice chair of concerts for the SAPB and a junior majoring in accounting, felt good about the performance.

“I thought the show was great,” Hersch said. “We had a really good turnout from the students and it looked like everyone was enjoying it a lot.”

Sean ended the night with his hit song, “I Don’t F*ck With You,” encouraging the crowd to throw up their middle fingers.

He clarified, however, that he did, in fact, f*ck with the audience at Binghamton University.

Adrian Lux and Cozz to open for Big Sean https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/big-sean-openers/58857/ Fri, 09 Oct 2015 08:00:06 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=58857 The Student Association Programming Board announced that Adrian Lux and Cozz will open for Big Sean when he performs at the Events Center for the Fall Concert on October 15.

Lux, a house DJ and music producer from Sweden, released his debut full-length in 2012. The DJ is signed to Ultra Records, and his tracks “Can’t Sleep” and “Wild Child” have been featured on the video games FIFA 11 and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, respectively. His tracks have been remixed by famed DJs like Avicii and Axwell, and Lux has even done remixes for artist Lana Del Rey. Lux was also starred in the Swedish TV show “Heartbeats.”

Also opening for Big Sean is Los Angeles rapper Cozz, who released his debut studio album “Cozz & Effect” in 2014. The rapper, whose real name is Cody Osagie, is signed to former fall concert performer J. Cole’s Dreamville Records and Interscope Records. After being signed to J. Cole’s label, Cozz joined the rapper on his successful “Forest Hills Drive Tour.” Cozz’s rise in the industry was a quick one, as he only started rapping in 2013.

Doors for the concert will open at 6:30 p.m. Cozz will perform from 8:00-8:30 p.m. and Adrian Lux from 8:45-9:45 p.m. leading up to Big Sean’s set which will go from 10:00-11:00 p.m.

Magic Man to perform at homecoming tailgate https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/magic-man-to-perform-at-homecoming-tailgate/58669/ Thu, 08 Oct 2015 02:25:28 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=58669 As a part of Binghamton University’s recent efforts to increase school spirit, electronic rock duo Magic Man will be perform at this year’s homecoming tailgate.

Boston-based musicians Alex Caplow and Sam Lee formed the duo in 2010, and released their first album, “Real Life Color” that same year. After adding more bandmates and releasing their 2013 EP “You Are Here,” Magic Man toured with Walk the Moon and began to gain mainstream success.

The duo released its first full length “Before the Waves” in 2014, and has since gained a following thanks to performances at South by Southwest and a spot on Panic! at the Disco’s “The Gospel Tour.” In 2015, band returned to it’s original two member group of Caplow and Lee.

Jennifer Keegin, the associate director for Campus Activities, said that Magic Man was considered for last years “Shindig at the Fountain,” being on a list of bands which Binghamton Underground Music Presents (BUMP) compiled.

The homecoming committee is bringing the band to this year’s celebrations with the hope of attracting more students to both the tailgate and the weekend’s highlight — Saturday’s soccer game against UMass Lowell.

“We’re just trying to create more fun, more music at the tailgate,” Keegin said.

The band will perform at a stage located next to the West Gym as part of the tailgate, which will take place in the Events Center parking lot from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Before the performance, David Simek, Associate Director of Athletics and Sports Administration for the Bearcats, as well as announcer at select Binghamton sports games, will DJ the festivities.

Rapper TobyMac to headline the Events Center on Oct. 8 https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/rapper-tobymac-to-headline-the-events-center-on-oct-8/57932/ Fri, 25 Sep 2015 07:56:27 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=57932 Six-time Grammy Award-winning Christian rapper TobyMac will bring his “This is Not a Test” tour to the Events Center at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 8.

The tour is in support of the rapper’s seventh album, “This is Not a Test,” which was released in early August. TobyMac began his music career as a member of the Christian rap/rock trio DC Talk in 1989. The group released five albums before going on hiatus in 2000.

The rapper released his debut solo album, “Momentum,” in 2001. The album went gold and was nominated for Best Rock Gospel album in 2003 and solidified the rapper’s status as a mainstay in contemporary Christian music. He is considered one of the first and best Christian rappers in music.

TobyMac’s sixth album, “Eye on It,” which experimented with a dubstep sound, debuted No. 1 on the Billboard 200. This marked the first time a Christian album opened at number one since LeAnn Rimes’s 1997 album “You Light Up My Life: Inspirational Songs.”

Daniel Ortenzi, a member of Koinonia, BU’s Christian a cappella group and a senior majoring in biomedical engineering, remembers listening to TobyMac as a child.

“TobyMac’s career has been very influential to all genres of Christian music,” said Ortenzi. “He was one of the first to mainstream Christian rap and rock, paving the way for more modern artists like Lecrae and Skillet.”

Since the start of his career with DC Talk in 1987, TobyMac has sold over 10 million albums.

Supporting TobyMac will be Christian pop star Britt Nicole, Colton Dixon — who was a contestant on the 11th season of “American Idol” — and newcomer Hollyn. Nicole began her career under her legal name, Brittany Waddell, before gaining success as Britt Nicole on the mainstream and Christian charts. Dixon, who came in seventh on her season of “American Idol,” has since released two albums. Hollyn, who gained success through her YouTube channel, has not released an album, but collaborated on two songs on TobyMac’s latest effort.

The tickets, ranging from $18 to $73, are available for purchase on the Events Center’s website or at the box office.

How to make it to break fast without breaking down: a guide to Yom Kippur https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/how-to-make-it-to-break-fast-without-breaking-down-a-guide-to-yom-kippur/57686/ Tue, 22 Sep 2015 05:58:33 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=57686 If you’re not thinking about skipping breakfast or lunch, you might not even realize that you missed a meal in the first place. If, however, it’s the only thing you can focus on for 24 hours, it pretty much consumes your entire being. Welcome to Yom Kippur. For those who do not celebrate, please, enjoy your day off for those of us who won’t. For those prepping for the big day, try to enjoy your last bites of food and sips of water on Tuesday night, and try not to think too hard about the 23 hours and 59 minutes ahead of you. Whether you are fasting for the first time, or are working on year number 9-ish — let’s not count freshman year when you went out — Release is here to help you make it through.

1) Wake up late — Unless you’re trying to make it to synagogue on time, wake up as late as you can. The later you wake up, the quicker you get to break your fast. Sure, the day is 24 hours, but if it starts at seven, and you go to sleep at 11, and then you sleep for 10 hours, you’ve only got around 10 hours left when you wake up. Besides, you definitely don’t get enough sleep to begin with. This is your day. You deserve this.

2) Plan ahead for the work you’ll have — You know you’re not supposed to actually work on Yom Kippur, so plan for the days ahead. It’s your time to start over: to start fresh. So, after you’re done repenting for the sin of going out every day of syllabus week — and every day for the two weeks after syllabus week — forgive yourself. And then make a plan to catch up. If you are planning on getting work done before the fast, then for the love of lox and bagels, actually get things done.

3) Distract yourself — This may seem impossible, but finding something to take your mind off of your grumbling stomach is critical to making it through. Whether it’s reading your favorite series of books, chatting with friends or just taking a six-hour nap, the more time you can kill, the better. If you live Downtown, try going for a walk through Recreation Park; if you live on campus, go explore the Nature Preserve. It’s the perfect opportunity during the last few weeks of acceptable weather.

4) Do not look at the kiddush table — really, don’t do it. Yes, there will be a point where the food will be out and, in the words of M.C. Hammer, “U Can’t Touch This.” Just don’t look at it. Look at your friends. Look at your hands. Or, as your parents once put it, “you can try looking at the book.” Only 20 more minutes. You can do this.

5) When you break fast, don’t over-do it — After 24 hours without any food, it’s easy to go overboard at sunset. When you’re loading up your bagel with a kilo of egg salad, think back to last year when you felt sick after speed-eating that plate of lox your friend brought over. We know the feeling. You don’t even think you’re still hungry, but you can’t stop pounding back jelly-filled cookies. Stop now, or your stomach will regret it.

Big Sean to headline fall concert https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/online-only-fall-concert/57564/ Fri, 18 Sep 2015 15:57:57 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=57564 Rapper Big Sean will make Binghamton a “Dark Sky Paradise” when he headlines the fall concert at the Events Center on October 15.

The grammy-nominated rapper — who recently wrapped up a tour for his third album “Dark Sky Paradise” with past fall concert headliner J.Cole — was just nominated for his 10th BET Hip-Hop Award, second only to rapper Drake, who performed at Binghamton University in 2010.

Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Big Sean released his debut album, “Finally Famous,” in 2011 after his mix tapes helped him gain a large following online. His latest release, which was co-produced by Kanye West, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 list.

According to Bernadette Machuca, the Student Association’s vice president for programming, Big Sean was the third most popular artist on the fall concert survey. The top two choices were either unavailable to perform or not within the Student Association’s budget.

Big Sean’s performance will mark the sixth consecutive year that the Student Association has brought a hip-hop artist for their fall semester concert.

The concert’s two opening acts will be another rapper and a DJ, and will be announced at a later date, according to Machuca.

The Student Association will run a special presale beginning Friday, September 18, which will allow concertgoers to get tickets at a discounted price with the promo code ‘BigSean2015.’

According to Machuca, 200 promo code tickets will be available at a cost of $20, plus fees.

For those who can’t get their hands on one of the first 200 tickets, regular ticket sales will start on Monday at noon at a cost of $25 plus fees for students and $35 plus fees for the public.

Tickets will be available for purchase online through the Events Center’s website and at their box office.

Restaurant Week, Fall 2015: The Loft at 99 https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/restaurant-week-fall-2k15-loft-at-99/57348/ Thu, 17 Sep 2015 06:27:06 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=57348 The Loft at 99 is open and airy, with a modern design: brick walls featuring works by local artists and a bar highlighted by exposed beams.

Not only is the restaurant visually appealing, but it’s also reflective of the owners’ approach to food: taking classic techniques and updating them with a fresh twist.

Co-owners and brothers Kyle and Michael Bunker, who attended The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and New England Culinary Institute respectively, are both classically trained in French cooking. Originally from the Binghamton area, the Bunkers decided to bring their knowledge of cooking back to the city’s up-and-coming restaurant scene.

“There is a new growth happening Downtown, a renaissance of sorts,” Kyle said. “We want people outside who have forgotten about Downtown to come and experience what is happening.”

The Bunkers’ goal was to open an intimate, 50-to-60-seat restaurant that showcases a smaller menu, allowing them to perfect their dishes while using quality products.

In line with their menu, the Restaurant Week options are limited, but carefully selected and comprised of dishes from regular menu items and specials.

“Sometimes, we’ve been craving something, so we throw that on the menu,” Kyle said. “It will be around for ten days, and we can enjoy it for ourselves.”

Loft’s take on poutine, a popular dish in Quebec, Canada, consisted of house-made fries, a sausage gravy and cheese curds. The combination of crispy fries with the creamy sausage gravy created a balanced appetizer that was full of flavor.

Inspired by the changing seasons, Loft’s butternut squash soup was light but satisfying. The dish — which will hopefully make an appearance on their fall/winter menu — wasn’t overpoweringly sweet, and the cimicci olive oil added just enough salt.

The appetizer portions were large enough to be an entrée, so make sure to ask for a to-go container so you have room for the other courses.

The Loft at 99 changes their menu twice a year, and Restaurant Week falls at a perfect time for them to test out dishes before they unveil new selections.

“Restaurant Week allows us to sample things that have been floating around in our heads and get some feedback from customers,” Kyle said. “We want to offer something a little different from the regular dinner menu, and we want to be a little creative.”

The options for the main course were a pasta dish, risotto or a Loft signature burger. The pasta was orecchiette, topped with a sausage crumble, broccoli rabe and a fennel lemon dust. The pasta was tender, and the sausage added a hint of spice and salt to round out a light but filling entrée.

The risotto had a basil puree, charred corn, blistered cherry tomatoes and parmesan cheese. The dish was creamy, well-cooked and complemented by the sweet burst of tomato between bites. It was, however, a heavy dish, and with the cream in both the soup and poutine appetizers, it became a little overwhelming.

The desserts were unique in construction, taste and presentation. A chocolate peanut butter mousse took the form of a savory pâté and was drizzled with molten chocolate sauce.

A new addition, the l’aveggio cold brew affogato, an Italian dessert that usually includes hot espresso poured over vanilla ice cream, was a creative and modern take on a classic. The cold brew coffee allowed the ice cream to remain cold, and the less acidic flavor of the cold brew was a delicious complement to the meal’s sweet ending.

The Loft at 99 is located on 99 Court St.

Miley Cyrus drops album, and possibly acid, with “Dead Petz” https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/miley-cyrus-drops-album-and-possibly-acid-with-dead-petz/56787/ Fri, 04 Sep 2015 06:04:31 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=56787 As the host of last week’s MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus confirmed for viewers that she does in fact “smoke pot” and “love peace.” So when she announced a new, free album — “Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz” — at the end of her performance of the unbearable “Dooo It!,” it was unclear whether Miley would have anything else to say.

Apart from her Happy Hippie Presents collaborations on YouTube, “Dead Petz” is the first new music Cyrus has released since her 2013 hit “Bangerz.” Filled with hip-hop influenced hits, “Bangerz” was the rebellion that Cyrus needed to break out of her Disney-star mold.

Now, with the help of Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne and “Bangerz” producer Mike WiLL Made-It, Cyrus has dropped a 92-minute collaboration of space rock beats, her often-confusing dreams and odes to past loves and dead pets.

Some of the songs on Cyrus’ 23-track venture are, in fact, almost impossible to listen to. “Milky Milky Milk,” which features lines like “from sucking on your nipples, licking milky, milky stars,” is doomed from the start. The music itself is a harsh mix of synthetic beats that do little to help Cyrus’ overproduced voice on the track. It’s a fact that Cyrus has real vocal abilities, and the layers of mixing over her voice do her a major disservice.

Other songs to avoid include “Miley Tibetan Bowlzzz,” “Tangerine (ft. Big Sean)” — which was surprisingly disappointing considering both artists’ abilities — and “I’m so Drunk.”

“Space Boots” is the song that you’d imagine the titular character from “Zenon: Girl of 21st Century” would listen to if she were into indie pop in 2015. Though this song is still heavy on the synthesizer, Cyrus’ voice is sweet, simple and isn’t overpowered by unfiltered noise in the background. A balanced and even marketable song, this track may be one of the album’s best efforts.

Suprisingly, the majority of “Dead Petz” isn’t as brash as its least successful tracks. Most of the album has a psychedelic, Jefferson Airplane vibe, which is no doubt aided by Coyne’s close work on the album.

One of the highlights of the album is Cyrus’ ballad “Karen Don’t Be Sad,” which provides a soft, piano-heavy take on the album’s space vibe. The song is lyrically strong as well, compared to some songs that are more difficult to grasp.

“Lighter,” likewise, is a standout on the album. While the lyrics leave something to be desired, the much-needed percussion that Mike WiLL adds on this track makes it one of the best to dance to on the album.

Of course, Miley’s beloved dead pets aren’t forgotten. “The Floyd Song (Sunrise),” pays tribute to Miley’s dog, which died in 2014. The dog was also honored on Cyrus’ “Bangerz” tour in the form of a huge, inflated replica. This song is not Cyrus’ strongest, but is a good choice if you need some background music for a sob fest.

“Pablow the Blowfish,” which was originally released in May, honors Miley’s lost pet Pablow. The track seems mildly ridiculous at first, but that becomes part of its charm. It’s a heartfelt ballad that brings the listener into Cyrus’ world of loss, and after a few listens, it’s hard not to be heartbroken about Pablow. Cyrus even breaks into tears at the end of the song, and whether or not they’re real, they’re convincing.

The album’s closing track, “Twinkle Song,” seems to literally be Cyrus trying to figure out her dreams. But aside from the on-key screaming at the end, the song itself is surprisingly pleasant and almost gives off a Regina Spektor “Fidelity” vibe.

Though the album is entirely too long, the songs with more restraint make clear Cyrus’ power as a performer. Miley may be stuck in her own dream world, but with some strong showings, “Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz” shouldn’t be overlooked.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: how to celebrate syllabus week https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/releases-guide-to-properly-celebrating-syllabus-week/56450/ Mon, 31 Aug 2015 15:19:51 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=56450 At the beginning of every semester, syllabus week graces Binghamton University with its presence. With assignments almost nonexistent and class times cut short, it may be the last chance you get to enjoy some free time for a few months. Make the most of syllabus week with Release’s tips.

1. Go to general interest meetings (GIMs) — Whether you’re a freshman looking to find your place or a senior trying to get out of a rut, GIMs are a great way to find your next great passion (or just grab a couple of slices of free Nirchi’s). From learning about sports debate to finding out when you can get guitar lessons, it’s important to make college more than just classes and partying. Don’t get us wrong, do those things. But find other stuff as well. It’s great to go places with a group of friends, but don’t let people hold you back from exploring a new hobby. There is no shame in going to a meeting alone.

2. Check out the gym — Nights filled with drinking and binge eating can take a toll on your body during your college years, and syllabus week is the perfect time to get on track to keeping yourself healthy. Even if you don’t want to spend the money on a gym membership, use your free time to find some free workout videos or head to Walmart to buy some cheap weights. Getting into a routine now will give you a sense of calm when classes get crazy, and working out is a perfect excuse to avoid studying.

3. Go outside — Before Binghamton gets gray and cold, take advantage of the sunshine and embrace the outdoors. If you have a car, there’s still time to take a trip to the lake at Nathaniel Cole Park (fondly known as the Blake) with your friends. The Spine is usually packed with people when it’s nice out, so it’s a great place to hang out with friends or even find new ones. Exploring Downtown on foot is a great way to find some of Binghamton’s hidden gems, like the Confluence Park walking trail along the river.

4. Actually read your syllabus — You may want to pretend it’s still summer, but the reality is that tests and papers will sneak up on you quickly. Take some time to check out your assignments and make a game plan for the semester. Plus, you don’t want to be surprised when you find out you have a 20-page paper due at the end of the semester. It’s good to challenge yourself, but if you read your syllabi and feel like you can’t handle the work load, take full advantage of the add/drop period. It’s OK to drop a class if you need to.

5. Have some drinks during the week — Once classes and clubs really get started, it’s important to try to prioritize school over alcohol. But while it’s still syllabus week, throw priorities to the side and enjoy Binghamton’s weeknight nightlife. Enjoy Taco Tuesdays at the Belmar or get competitive at Wednesday night trivia at Tom & Marty’s. This may be the only time of year that turn-up Tuesday won’t make you feel guilty on Wednesday morning.

BU’s theatre department announces 2015-2016 mainstage season https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/mainstage-productions/56314/ Tue, 25 Aug 2015 14:14:17 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=56314 The lights are down and the curtain is up on the Binghamton University theatre department’s 2015-2016 mainstage season.

The four shows — “God of Carnage,” “Spring Awakening,” “Dancing at Lughnasa” and “Hamlet” — were announced last Monday after deliberation by the production selection committee. The selection process begins with the committee, which includes the department chair, the shows’ directors, designers and the technical director, as well as students suggesting plays for the upcoming season.

According to professor Anne Brady, once the committee has weighed all of the options, they finalize the season. The decision usually includes a musical, a contemporary play, a classic play with heightened language and a comedy or drama to round out the selection.

“The Production Selection Committee chooses the plays to represent a varied season that we think will be good for our students, the university and the community,” Brady wrote in an email.

First to come to the stage will be “God of Carnage,” a dark comedy directed by theatre professor Tom Kremer. In the play, four parents come together to discuss an argument between their children. Despite their initial goal of having a peaceful discussion, the conversation eventually devolves into chaos. The play will run from October 15 to October 25 in Studio A of the Fine Arts Building.

Assistant professor Tommy Iafrate, who is new to BU, will direct this year’s musical selection, “Spring Awakening.” The Tony Award-winning musical, which will run from November 13 to November 22, takes place in late 19th-century Germany, and follows the lives of teenagers who find themselves revolting against their parents on a path to moral and sexual discovery.

Iafrate wrote in an email that the selection committee wanted to choose a musical that would excite the student body.

“Several voices in the department agreed that Spring Awakening would generate lots of enthusiasm,” Iafrate wrote. “Its themes of sexual exploration in a world of excessive moral strictures are as relevant today as they were in 1891 when the play that inspired this musical was first written.”

With a score filled with rock-influenced songs, “Spring Awakening” will give audiences a fresh take on musical theatre.

“I am thinking of Spring Awakening not as a musical in the traditional sense,” wrote Iafrate, “but as a play that keeps getting interrupted by a rock concert.”

“Dancing at Lughnasa,” which will be directed by professor Elizabeth Mozer, follows the lives of the five Mundy sisters as narrated by one sister’s son, Michael. Set in 1936 rural Ireland, the play follows the sisters as they discuss the world around them from the safety of their own cottage, revealing the importance of their close family bond. The play will run from March 4 to March 14 in Watters Theater.

“Hamlet,” directed by Brady, will help to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death this spring. According to Brady, the theatre department intends to collaborate with the special collections of Glenn G. Bartle Library and other departments on campus to honor Shakespeare’s work during the spring semester.

Shakespeare’s tale follows the play’s namesake on a mission to avenge his father’s death, which drives him to question his sanity. The production will take the Watters Theater from April 29 to May 8.

Auditions for the fall shows will be held on Monday, August 31 and Tuesday, September 1. Brady said that she looks forward to seeing new people at the auditions.

“We often cast freshmen and newcomers, especially in the musical and in the plays with larger casts,” she wrote.

For Iafrate, the key to auditioning is to fully engage with the material.

“For those planning to audition, the best advice I can give is to sing something you enjoy and fully commit to the mood of the music and lyrics,” he wrote.

Tickets for individual performances and season ticket bundles are available now through the Anderson Center’s website.

Pipe Dream Presents: Where on campus should you eat? https://www.bupipedream.com/multimedia/pipe-dream-presents-where-on-campus-should-you-eat/56136/ Tue, 07 Jul 2015 01:39:19 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=56136 Sharing a room 2k15: The perfect mate or the one you’ll hate? https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/roommates-you-may-encounter-in-college/56152/ Tue, 07 Jul 2015 01:31:41 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=56152 Whether you’re an only child who has never had to share, or have literally lived with someone since the womb, meeting your first college roommate can be an exciting and terrifying task. Even if you’ve hand-picked your “perfect match” on Facebook, there’s no telling who someone will be behind a closed dorm room door. Don’t worry though, there is plenty of gray area in between finding your college day-one and sharing a room with a psycho.

For those who have always lived alone, you’ll find that having a roommate has the potential for a lot of perks. If you’re really lucky, having a roommate will mean the size of your closet will double thanks to the wonderful “what’s mine is yours” rule. But be wary. First, obviously make sure that they are DTSS (down to share stuff). And if they are, know that there is a difference between borrowing a scarf and keeping their pants for three months. Recognize when it’s time to give your roommate (and their stuff) some space.

You might move in on the first day to find someone already organizing their outfits for the week. Having a roommate who is a neat freak or perfectionist can be a dream come true or your worst nightmare. On the plus side, you’ll never be worried about bringing someone back to a messy place because chances are that they’ll even try to straighten up your side of the room too. Of course, if you’re not into someone moving your things to dust or passive-aggressively mentioning the dish you haven’t washed, it’s important to set boundaries to make sure your relationship doesn’t get messy. On the flip side, maybe you’ll be the neat freak roommate. Just remember to be patient with those who do not hold themselves to the same standards.

On the topic of messy relationships, it’s important to make sure that you’re aware of how much time you’ll be spending together. You’re going to be around your roommate a lot, so even if you are friends, make sure you are meeting new people and branching out. While it may be great to have things in common, doing everything together will result in getting sick of each other. Meet other people; your roommate will always be there when you get home. Another situation you might encounter is “the homebody.” If you end up with a roommate who never leaves the room, things can get awkward. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you need some alone time or maybe want to get down with a new friend. Sexiling (or just kicking your roommate out) isn’t cool on the regular, but neither is hogging the room.

Perhaps you do random roommate selection, only to eventually Facebook stalk them and be blinded by their beauty. Don’t let this get you down. Sure, there might be suitors lining up at your door to talk to them, but use it as an opportunity to make new friends. Being the less-hot roommate is not as upsetting as it sounds. Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and you can get lucky with the right attitude. If you know you’re the hotter roommate, don’t ever let on that you know. Keep that to yourself.

Remember of course, that no matter how many horror stories you hear, your roommate might end up being completely awesome, and you’ll live with them for the rest of your college experience. You literally have a built-in friend in your home, and it doesn’t get much better than that. Even if you don’t click instantly, remember that the best bonds are built over time. Just keep an open mind to whomever you are living with, and you probably won’t end up as the star of your own college-themed horror movie.

Eat, drink, repeat: a handy guide to Binghamton dining https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/eat-drink-repeat-a-handy-guide-and-flowchart-to-binghamton-dining/55957/ Thu, 25 Jun 2015 23:41:32 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=55957 Welcome to college, where the food is plentiful and the Freshman 15 is real. Whether it’s breakfast before your 8 a.m. or a late-night snack, it can be difficult to figure out the most delicious place to satisfy your cravings. To make things easier for you, we at Release are here with the lowdown on campus eateries. Be less of a noob with our handy guide and flow-chart.

The Marketplace: The New University Union’s Marketplace is a haven on campus for those looking for quality eats. From familiar options like Red Mango and Starbucks to Indian cuisine from local restaurant Moghul, the Marketplace is likely to become your go-to between classes for a satisfying bite. Not only is the Marketplace conveniently located, but it also has the broadest selection of food with 11 different venues. Still, the retail dining prices can eat away at your meal plan. You can literally buy a whole day’s worth of dining hall food for the price of one burrito bowl. Look out for great values like the “Bearcat” breakfast from Cakes & Eggs and chicken over rice from Chick-n-Bap, a student-run joint operated in Wholly Habaneros on the weekends.

Chenango Room: The Chenango Room is Binghamton University’s only full-service restaurant on campus, and it’s pretty amazing. If you’re able to swing by during their limited weekday hours, it is well worth the extra few dollars on your meal plan. With juicy burgers like the bacon-topped Chenango Fandango and fries you could call home about (your mother will be happy to hear from you), the Chenango Room doesn’t disappoint on flavor. Plus, they even have a full buffet — a great option if you’re running to get food between classes.

Appalachian Dining Hall (App) in Mountainview Community: With a view overlooking campus and the city of Binghamton in the distance, this open-air space is incredibly beautiful and the food may just make the climb up the hill worth it. App boasts a Mediterranean bar for your feta fix and a Simple Servings station full of healthier items if you can’t be trusted around pizza and fries. Pro-tip: don’t walk all the way up the winding path in front of the library — it’s easier to take the paved shortcut behind Oneida Hall in College-in-the-Woods.

College-in-the-Woods Dining Hall: Being the oldest dining hall on campus, CIW’s two-leveled eating space can feel a little retro. Its Mexican station, as well as vegan station, make this conveniently located eatery a go-to. Even if you are a full-on carnivore, make sure not to skip out on the fried lemon tofu: it’s delicious. Other perks of CIW include the vegan smoothie bar with fresh fruit and, if you’re a classic rock fan, Binghamton’s radio station The Whale always plays in the background.

Hinman College Dining Hall: Although it may be easy to get to after a lecture, Hinman’s hot entrée section usually looks more like mush than an appetizing meal. This dining hall is hit-or-miss, so unless you’re craving spicy stir-fry and dumplings from their Asian food station or a juicy cheeseburger at the grill, you may want to go elsewhere. Hinman’s one saving grace is its Night Owl. It’s pretty much the only place on campus where you can get pizza rolls and jalapeño poppers until 4 a.m. on weekends, and while it may be the only option after a long night out, it’s definitely a satisfying one.

Chenango Champlain Collegiate Center (C4) Dining Hall: C4, a dining hall located between the Dickinson and Newing Communities, is massive, crowded and, quite frankly, subpar. The lines are too long, take-out boxes vanish too quickly and there are barely any bagels left in the bin after a long day. However, a kosher entrée station and a halal entrée station are available here, so there’s something for almost everyone. Pros of C4: the pancakes are huge, they have fresh mozzarella at the sandwich station and sometimes the Kosher Korner has french toast sticks and incredible philo dough pastries.

Tom & Marty’s takes a shot at something new https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/tom-amp-marty8217s-takes-a-shot-at-something-new/55630/ Sun, 10 May 2015 22:46:33 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=55630 If on any given weekend night you’ve gone to the Downtown establishment Tom & Marty’s, you’ve heard Larry Shea’s booming voice yell, “It’s shot wheel time!” over the speaker system. But last Tuesday, something aside from the deep bass shook State Street to its core.

On May 5, Shea, the owner of Tom & Marty’s, tweeted “Tonight is the last night of the Shot Wheel. Giving it away after trivia tomorrow.”

If you are a Tom & Marty’s regular, you probably experienced a sense of shock and confusion. Why is the shot wheel gone? Where is it going? Will we ever have $3 shots again? As some students struggled to work through the repercussions of the news, others had their eye on one goal: winning the prize.

Forget having a 4.0 GPA or winning a scholarship. The most rewarding thing you can have in Binghamton is the chance to walk around and parade the shot wheel for all to see while “Eye of the Tiger” plays in the background. Last Wednesday night, the team of trivia regulars Alcoholics Anonymous took home the prize to end all prizes.

After the normal trivia run, a sheet was handed out containing eight very specific questions about the bar. It was a test of knowledge and skill, but also a test of faith. To win, you would’ve had to know things about the business and its employees. Which shot on the wheel was the least popular? Which mixed drinks were the most popular? Which bartender owns a bulldog?

Annie Dailey, a senior majoring in art and design, was on the lucky winning team.

“We won the shot wheel and it was amazing,” Dailey said. “Larry was like crying a little bit because he didn’t want to give it away, but we’re just screaming with happiness. It was a very glorious day and then we got to carry it home and that was cool too, carrying it like a shield.”

In the heated battle for the shot wheel, any advantage was needed. They said that they knew a lot, and that knowing a Tom & Marty’s bartender helped them answer some of the trickier questions.

So why get rid of the shot wheel we all know and love?

“We wanted to put new shots on the wheel that people would like more,” said Addie Dean, a bartender at Tom & Marty’s and a sophomore majoring in human development.

The new wheel was probably long overdue anyway, as the old one had a decade’s worth of wear and tear to show.

“They don’t spin it [the old shot wheel] anymore … they turn it themselves a couple of dials to like land on a shot because it’s so broken,” Dailey said. “When we were carrying it home it was kind of like dragging on the floor and stuff.”

With the shot wheel safe in someone’s Downtown house, something felt different on Thursday. What used to hold the beautiful promise of cheap alcohol turned into an empty spot in the bar corner.

Patrons headed into Tom & Marty’s on Thursday to begin the healing process. Little did they know what was in store for the evening.

“This next song goes out to the shot wheel,” said Shea as Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” played throughout the bar. Solemn faces lined the dance floor during the tribute while people sang along with heavy hearts. Yet despite the fears of its patrons, it seemed as if the tradition would continue.

Just after midnight, there was a quick change in the music that made the crowded bar roar.

“Oh my god, is that shot wheel music?” Shea said proudly over the microphone, as Europe’s “The Final Countdown” created an aura of excitement and mystery.

Suddenly, in the most wonderful fashion, a familiar round shape rose from the ground in the hands of a Tom & Marty’s bouncer. A new shot wheel had emerged like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

Boasting six new shots — Birthday Cake, Jim Beam, Blue Hawaiian, Fireball, Pancake Breakfast Shot and Gusher — Tom & Marty’s “Shot Wheel 2.0” is destined to make the bar the envy of all other State Street establishments.

Though Shea’s initial announcement sent fear into the hearts of Binghamton University students, the new shot wheel was a glimmer of hope in an otherwise stressful time in the semester. Propped in its predecessor’s old stomping grounds, the short-lived void was filled and a collective clattering of shot wheel chips filled the air.

Restaurant Week Spring 2015: River Bistro https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/restaurant-week-spring-2015-river-bistro/52489/ Fri, 27 Mar 2015 06:17:48 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=52489 Hotels aren’t just for business lunches and Family Weekend.

River Bistro, which is located in Binghamton’s DoubleTree Hotel, may not be the first spot you consider for Restaurant Week. The restaurant feels upscale without being intimidating. Complete with a bar and lounge just outside the restaurant, River Bistro’s modern look adds a certain charm to your meal. While it’s a fancy restaurant in a fancy hotel, but the well-placed flowers are fake and the napkins are paper, so you won’t feel out of place in jeans.

While the hotel has been around for over 20 years, the interior of the restaurant was updated about two and a half years ago, which is made evident by the restaurant’s chic and open design. The glass windows don’t let you forget that you’re in a hotel, but hey, at least it’s good for people watching.

According to River Bistro manager Paul Daniels, most students don’t think of River Bistro when considering where to eat. This was evident by the sparsely filled dining room, which Daniels said may also be attributed to the increased number of restaurants participating in Restaurant Week this year. In addition to having a 60 percent increase in business from a regular week, Daniels views Restaurant Week as a way to connect with the locals.

“We just like being involved, and doing the whole Broome County Southern Tier team spirit thing,” Daniels said. “This is one way for us to get out there with the locals and be a part of that and draw in more of a local crowd.”

The appetizer options included a mushroom bisque and a scallop on a half shell. The bisque, which was complete with a goat cheese crostini, was definitely the better value of the two options. While the scallop and accompanying greens and bacon were delicious, it was ultimately an unsatisfying portion.

For the entrée, we chose the jerk spiced chicken and the gnocchi. The Restaurant Week menu also offers choices of fish and chips or shepherd’s pie. Both meals were delicious, but the gnocchi wasn’t anything you’ve never had before. If you like pesto and pasta, you’d do well with this big plate of food. Don’t let the “jerk” in the jerk chicken scare you. This dish was definitely on the mild side. In fact, we could have used it spicier. This comfort food came on a bed of black beans, potatoes and plantains, which complemented the chicken perfectly.

Dessert was a choice of either a minted lemon mousse cake or a tiramisu ice cream with almond biscotti. The lemon cake was extremely potent, and is the lesser of the two options unless lemon is really your thing. The tiramisu ice cream was an enjoyable and light way to round off a heavier entrée course, succeeding in both texture (yes, there were lady fingers folded in) and flavor.

Chef Robert Gedman, an import from England, changes the menu seasonally. The Restaurant Week selections are a take on the comfort food that River Bistro serves up during the colder months. They also have a large cocktail selection, and Daniels says the “Employee’s Favorite” cocktail is a crowd pleaser.

If you’ve never considered River Bistro, take a walk around the corner from the hour-long wait at the Lost Dog Cafe for a new dining experience that already feels familiar.

Shamrock your last minute green outfit https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/shamrock-your-last-minute-green-outfit/50049/ Fri, 06 Mar 2015 05:56:30 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=50049 The time had come yet again. It was only a few days before Parade Day, and the stores were lined with themed T-shirts and light-up headbands. I promised myself I would go shopping early this year, but instead I had to fight off some wild Bearcats in hope of finding a perfect Parade Day outfit. Armed with a Shamrock Shake (mandatory for your shopping trip) and $20 I probably should have spent on textbooks, I was off to Town Square Mall for my green-filled shopping adventure.

Walking into Wal-Mart, I realized I had to make a game time decision. Did I want to look State Street chic or just straight up festive? I decided to make an attempt at looking cute, combing through the arts and crafts aisles for a bedazzler to spell out “GET WRECKED” on a sweatshirt. With no luck, I considered doing some green and orange tie-dye, but then remembered running out of dye last year and moved on.

I made my way toward the clothing section, and even from a distance I could see it calling my name: the hideous mecca of themed shirts. I felt a slight tinge of hope. I felt my stomach begin to fill with green beer as I skipped toward it, my eyes locking on a shirt with a green skull made out of flowers. What was this? It was hideous. Next to it, I saw another shirt featuring a skull with angel wings and a shamrock hat. When did Parade Day get so dark? A mother and her young daughter walked by me, and I got a disapproving look. Maybe I’ll just wear a plain green shirt after all.

With my dreams beginning to seem more like nightmares, I looked at the accessories section. All I saw was an overpriced flimsy headband and a huge shamrock necklace that I’d never try to pull off. Besides, the packaging said the shamrock was supposed to light up, but the only one left was broken. How would I express my excitement without the proper light show? It seemed like everyone had gotten to the good stuff before me, but I didn’t give up and made my way to Five Below.

Defeat loomed over my head like a gray Binghamton sky, but as I walked into my next destination, a small patch of sunlight seemed to shine down on me. There it was, a whole display of $1 St. Patrick’s Day accessories, and they were all mine for the buying. Does no one shop at Five Below? This place is great! Headbands, shamrock-shaped sunglasses and shot glass necklaces filled my heart with joy. And I needed those shamrock-patterned socks, even if they were only ankle length and no one would see them.

Making my way back to the bus with bags full of more necklaces than I could wear at once, I knew I had won Parade Day. With a shot glass around my neck and a really ugly tiny green hat, how could I lose? I threw out the Shamrock Shake I had forgotten to drink and touched my new green feather boa. This will be the best Parade Day yet.

Fashion week gets weird https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/fashion-week-gets-weird/48784/ Tue, 24 Feb 2015 04:59:13 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=48784 Last Friday marked the end of New York Fashion Week, where both nearly unknown and legendary designers alike showed their fall and winter collections to fellow designers, magazine editors and celebrities dying to be the first to guess this year’s new trends. While many shows left us crying over clothes we couldn’t have, some designers knew how to make us laugh (and left us saying “huh”) with some strange runway choices.

1. Hood By Air — With his fresh take on class menswear, Hood By Air designer Shayne Oliver rarely disappoints during fashion week. Oliver’s collection at the tents this year didn’t fail to offer showgoers something a little outrageous, from pants that looked like they could be worn by a scarecrow to an expertly designed shoulderless coat. The real showstopper at the HBA show, however, was the incredibly terrifying pair of stockings worn over the models’ faces that gave off a murderous alien vibe. At least we now have a way to repurpose ripped stockings.

2. Thom Browne — For his fall and winter ready to wear collection, Thom Browne delivered a show that was dark, intriguing and filled with coats that would make anyone look good in the Binghamton cold. Maybe it was that same cold that gave Browne the inspiration to cover his models’ faces with various sheer black veils, but there was one in particular that seemed just a little off. With what looked barbed wire crossing the model’s mouth and whales covering the dark circles under her eyes, it seemed like Browne may have gone too far with his “Moby Dick”/”Prison Break” crossover.

3. Delpozo — For the majority of the Delpozo show, designer Josep Font offered up brightly colored, whimsical designs that were quite simply cause for a smile. When Font offered up a knit, oversized sweater that looked like a set of pom-poms threw up on it, it suddenly felt like you were laughing at the show rather than with it. Having fun with your clothes is important, but this sweater looked like a kindergartener’s first attempt at knitting.

4. Thaddeus O’Neil — Thaddeus O’Neil’s presentation at NYFW was actually pretty great. Their laid-back men’s wear style is casual, a little offbeat and accessible to those fashion-challenged guys trying to up their game. The fashion-forward brand got a little medieval this week, with one of their models sporting a chain mail-covered beard and another looking like he just stepped out of “Game of Thrones.” The good news? If you’ve been saving that costume from your stint on the renaissance fair circuit, now might be the time to rock it.

5. VFiles — It takes the mind of a genius designer to fall this hard, creating a menswear look that more closely resembles carpets draped over the model than a carefully constructed garment. Designer Julia Seemann took the “boxy” look to a whole new level with this oversized jacket and skirted bottom. Topped off with a fuzzy sandal-slipper hybrid, this VFiles look brings hope to those who want to channel their nearest furniture store, or maybe just the floor of their dorm room.

The best Hugh Grants https://www.bupipedream.com/ac/the-best-hugh-grants/48045/ Fri, 13 Feb 2015 06:10:19 +0000 http://www.bupipedream.com/?p=48045 Thankfully, we don’t have measles, but Binghamton University has been suffering from a bout of Hugh Grant Fever. The British heartthrob graced students with his presence last Sunday, inducing dreams of romantic comedy all across campus. With love and Grant’s cologne in the air, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate the famous Brit’s visit. Whether you’re snuggling up to your significant other, a friend or just a bottle of wine, these Hugh Grant movies will get your heart racing.

1. “Two Weeks Notice” (2002) — In this early 2000s gem, romcom favorite Sandra Bullock teams up with Grant for the ultimate snobby-rich-boy-meets-unimpressed-activist flick. Bullock’s role as Grant’s sassy assistant keeps the romantic tension way up, while the comic relief of Grant’s often incompetent character will leave you feeling both frustrated and infatuated. An added bonus? “Two Weeks Notice” was written and directed by none other than BU alum Marc Lawrence. Plus, it’s the perfect boss/employee fantasy (you know, if you’re into that kind of thing).

2. “Notting Hill” (1999) — This story of an average but incredibly handsome bookstore owner who meets a famous actress may just be the most important romantic comedy of the ’90s. Featuring none other than America’s sweetheart Julia Roberts, this heartwarming film proves that not even an ocean or security on a movie set can keep true love apart. This movie is perfect for anyone with a secret crush who wants to be the “girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” If you’re watching with a friend, try to see who can make it the longest without swooning at both Grant and Robert’s winning smiles.

3. “Love, Actually” (2003) — While this favorite is usually reserved for the holiday season, there’s no reason you can’t get festive with Grant and an all-star British cast this Valentine’s Day. If you have a thing for guys with power, Grant’s role as the newly elected British prime minister is sure to get your blood flowing. As with most of Grant’s work, “Love, Actually” puts him in the middle of another unlikely, but dreamy, pairing with one of his house staff. If you weren’t already dreaming about cozying up to members of the British aristocracy on Feb. 14, this film is sure to put you in the mood.

4. “Bridget Jones’s Diary” (2001) and “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” (2004) — Fine, these are two films. But can you really watch a romcom without watching its sequel? In this take on Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” the very lucky Renee Zellweger finds herself romantically linked not only to Grant, but also to fellow British heartthrob Colin Firth. While Grant doesn’t win the girl, this film is perfect for anyone who has ever been caught between two attractive, former best friends with a difficult decision to make. That happens in real life, right?

5. “About A Boy” (2002) — In this unconventional romcom, Grant plays the son of a one-hit-wonder who has closed himself off to love. While things get a little dark at times, the blossoming friendship between Grant and a young Nicholas Hoult can warm any cold heart. With the help of his new friend, Grant finally opens up to the prospect of love, making Hoult the Cindy Lou Who to Grant’s Grinch. Not only will this movie give you hope that your mysterious crush may finally take interest, but you’ll also get to experience the love between two unlikely friends.
